Lessons in Conservation (LiC)

LiC dedicated to raising awareness about conservation in rural communities of sub-Saharan Africa.

SORAI is proud to work with incredible organizations at the forefront of conservation in both India and Africa.

One such partner is Lessons in Conservation, who, led by their founder Dean Carlisle is carrying out incredible work in the conservation education space, with a key mission to create a long-lasting platform that raises awareness about conservation in rural communities of sub-Saharan Africa.

In 2023 alone, LiC taught over 3700 learners, from 80 schools, across 10 African countries an amazing feat.

Lessons in Conservation (LiC) is a youth-led environmental education non-profit company based in South Africa, with operating teams in Eswatini, Malawi, Tanzania and Rwanda.
Their model focuses on empowering the youth of rural Africa, from a primary school level all the way through to university graduates.

LiC identifies and establishes relationships with schools’ community organisations that focus on the development and education of children and younger generations, and teaches them about the natural world, why we need it and what we can do to preserve it.

“The lessons we teach are essentially a sensitisation to ecology and wildlife conservation, as we strive to make conservation fun, getting the children out of the classroom as often as possible. These lessons are then followed up with an excursion into a wildlife area, so that they can see first hand the principles we have taught them in the classroom. For most, this is the first time they will ever see wildlife in their natural habitat.”

“I feel now, more than ever the importance of our work. As habitat and species loss continues at an unprecedented rate, it is up to all of us to join hands in this fight to protect the biodiversity we have left. Imagine how far we can go if we keep working for a better world - together.”
